Time to Welcome Y2K
By Declan McCullagh
May 19, 1999

The one thing we can say for certain about Y2K is that it's spawned all sorts of kooky web sites.

Don't get us wrong: We adore weirdness in any guise, and watching society grapple with Y2K as it goes mainstream has been a source of endless amusement.

We particularly enjoy good Year 2000 humor. Too bad not all sites that promise it can deliver it.

Take savethey2kbug.com. The authors tell us that: "Some wonderful things are in store if we stop worrying and learn to LOVE the bug." Visitors are asked to submit reasons why the world should love Y2K -- winners can receive T-shirts.

Some not-exactly-rib-tickling entries so far:

We all need the time off
No more telemarketers
Spam
No SPAM
Get back to nature
No new credit card debt
Campfires in your living room
Finally clean out the freezer
Plant the lawn in wheat (no mowing!)
Lose weight with the 'Millenium Diet'
Natural selection of companies with foresight
Bubba the 'Dry Goods King' will replace Bill Gates in the Fortune 500
Would I, could I, eat green eggs and ham?

Our own reason to welcome 1-1-00: No more lame Y2K humor sites.
