The Y2K Presidential Race By Declan McCullagh March 9, 1999 We've always enjoyed John "Exit Question" McLaughlin's Sunday morning talk shows, even though they're really taped on Friday. Last week that turned out to be a blessing for us Y2K watchers. Since the taping came only a few days after the release of the Senate report -- one particular bit of bureaucratese that received far more attention than it deserved -- discussion turned to Y2K. "Who is going to take the rap for that," asked McLaughlin on "One on One." He was talking about how many Y2K problems are expected to arise in January 2000, just as the US presidental campaign picks up steam. "If we have a recession, that will kill the Democratic nominee," replied pundit Stuart Rothenberg. "But I don't think we are going to have a recession." Rothenberg said Y2K is likely to cause "some disruption" -- but unless it causes the economy to tank, it won't have an effect on the presidential race. This, incidentally, is nothing new. We've known for almost a year that the GOP was hoping to pin Y2K on Al "Huh?" Gore.
