Britney Spears' Y2K Plans By Declan McCullagh April 19, 1999 Britney Spears may know how to capture the hearts and minds of pre-pubescent teens, but she hasn't captured the spirit of Y2K. In a recent and astoundingly well-attended celeb-chat on America Online, the host asked the 16-year old heartthrob what she was going to do for New Year's Eve. Replied Spears: "I'm definitely going to be at home because all these computers, I hear, are supposed to shut down and I'm going to be sad. So my mom's like, 'Britney, you're home.' So I'm probably just going to party with my friends." Spears, grounded by Mom? Playing it safe? Maudlin over the fate of VM/CMS mainframes? That's hardly the adventurous spirit we hoped for. Maybe she got spooked by her own lyrics, sure to be echoing in the minds of at least some banging-fist-on-forehead programmers around that time: "That's not the way I planned it."
